Optometrist
Duties and Responsibilities:
They treat vision problems
by diagnosing the problem and then prescribing correct eyeglasses, contact
lenses, or vision therapy. They specialize in industrial vision safety,
treatment of vision related learning disabilities, and environmental vision
care. They are not physicians and they may not write medical prescriptions,
treat diseases, or perform surgery. They are self-employed, many work for
hospitals, government agencies, optical manufacturers or universities.
Average Salary:
$78,000
Educational Requirements:
Students should take the
most challenging high school courses AP or IB available in math, science, and
English. At least two years of college in a pre-professional program. Optometry
school is 4 years long and after being awarded the
degree of Doctor of Optometry, optometrists must pass the state exam before starting
to practice.
I do not think that I would
like to become an optometrist because I do not want to specialize in the eyes, I
want to specialize in something other than that.
